Verizon, the Centro, the Mac and Me
On the advice of three (count 'em) three separate and far-flung Verizon tech guys, I bought a Centro last year. I was told it was the one phone/mail/PDA/Everthing-but-laundry gadget I could get that would play nice with my Mac and MacMail.
It did.
Sort of.
But it didn't speak "folder".
VersaMail LOOKED like it would speak folder. And I need that, b/c I have MacMail in the sky sort my mail for me (junk, family, writing work, volunteer work, podcast, etc) before I ever see it. Saves time. Saves trouble. Love it.
But.
Versamail (the default email on the Centro) doens't speak folder.
I've been "working" on this for the last eight months.
I finally--on the advice of a MacGuy--called PalmOS.
"IMAP," sayeth the good folks of Palm, "IMAP is the only kind of mail program that supports folder-speak with MacMail."
I get off the phone. I look. I am, in fact, running IMAP in VersaMail.
And it doesn't work.
So I go back to the web.
Here's what I found:
THIS program. SnapperMail. This Snapper program that is not cheap (you need the highest version to get all the functions you'll need)--it's not cheap because IT WORKS!
I can now call, get mail, send mail, get texts, send texts...you name it. (And I can turn the alerts off too!)
And no one.
NO ONE
at Verizon, Centro, or PalmOS knew about this--or at least no one I spoke to.
So--people--if you're having trouble with your mail in your hand-held-everything, please do the free trial of this product.
Impressive.
And it works.

WOW!
I did that when I started socks proper and never regretted it...plus the husband got a nice pair of comfy socks in the bargain. Not bad. He also got a pair this Xmas in the Harry and Ron colorway from Opal.
I've been making demo heels like a fiend out of ball ends (pedicure socks, anyone?)...and neglecting the rest of...you know... life, work, etc. But not the boys. They've been GREAT lately...must be the weather.
On a different note, I finished "The Graveyard Book." Gaiman has done it again. He's really giving Will Smith a run for it on my list...decisions decisions.
The novel I'm writing is closing in on finished. If only I could invent more time...
And...
Glory Be! I have work again. Actual, Paying work. I thank the gods on a fairly regular basis.

Just so you know when you see the movie
Quis custodiet ipsos custodes? is a Latin phrase from the Roman poet Juvenal, which literally translates to "Who will guard the guards themselves," and is variously translated in colloquial English as "Who watches the watchmen?", "Who watches the watchers?", "Who will guard the guards?", "Who shall watch the watchers?" or other similar translations.

I Love This Restaurant
I'm going to take Amy there this Saturday.
My sister's going to be married in the garden here and fed by Chris.
It
Is
Perfect.
The food is "conversational". I've never ordered a "regular" entree there. Instead, whoever I happen to be there with, we order patatas bravas, empanaditas, samosas, beef wellington, baked camembert en croute with apples and honeyed almonds...you get the idea. And we share. With brilliant wine pairings (I never pick, I let them do it) and Patron XX liqueur and decaf at the end, no meal there has ever been a disappointment.
Go.
Now.

So much for resolutions
The thing that's surprised me so much about this process is that writing the first draft was easy. It's the revising that's really a killer. Going back and fine-tuning, and connecting dots you didn't see the first time around, and making sure characters sound like themselves rather than like me.
Fun!
But a lot of work!
Plugging away at DH's xmas sock (the first one fit, yay!), a second Clapotis (Man, I love that pattern), sketching and painting, and prepping for my new class at the University.
All good. And cold out.
FINALLY it feels like it might be winter. Snow on the mountains. Just lovely.

Happy New Year!
That was a holiday season.
This is, pretty literally, the first time I've had a chance to sit at the computer and do more than triage for over a month and a half. Thanksgiving, finals, Portland, surgery, Hanukkah, illnesses, Christmas, more illnesses/asthma crud, New Year's and...phew...
I finished the socks for my father (allelu) before Xmas actually occurred and this year, instead of promising to knit things for people, I knit one sock each for husband and sons with a note: Does It Fit?
Husband and Thing 1 socks fit perfectly, Thing 2 sock needs some lengthening. Kid socks are so easy and quick, I didn't even use a pattern--yippee! So, battling Second Sock Syndrome easily since I had options and some lag time between the first sock and the final, I managed to knock out Thing 1's companion sock in a couple of days (red-light-knitting...easy). Now nearly to the heel flap in husband's sock, then on to the reconstruction of Thing 2's.
I'm still paining, quite a bit more than usual. I found this great site via CraftyPod (love!). Don't bother looking at the site unless you have at least fifteen minutes. You'll just be frustrated. It's lovely. And provocative without being obnoxious. And smart. And funny.
All the things I want to be when I grow up.
So...resolutions, right? Okey dokey, in no particular order:
- Get healthy (that would include being able to breathe as well as lost 30 lbs--and yes, it's that much. I'm tall. I hide it pretty well, but yes. Thirty pounds would be great).
- Yay Wii! More Wii Yoga! Rah Rah Rah! (motivation is key they tell me)
- Finish novel.
- Blog daily (it's a goal).
- Find gainful employment or sell lots of writing (how's that for useful?).
- Continue with the painting thing.
- In a different mode, paint kitchen
- Continue to work on weaving (it's a process, I've got a pretty detailied and find-guage handtowel project I'm planning. But it frightens me...).
- Play with boys lots.
- Read lots more (currently listening to You Suck! Highly recommended! Christopher Moore=genius, Susan Bennet...she sounds the way I'd like to think I sound...)
And that's pretty good. That's a lot. That's ridiculous. I'll be lucky to get around to one of those things. So that's great. My polygamous goal-setting multi-crafting nature approves.
Thank goodness.
You?

Why I love Neil Gaiman:
— Neil Gaiman (Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch)
"I can believe things that are true and things that aren't true and I can believe things where nobody knows if they're true or not. I can believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and the Beatles and Marilyn Monroe and Elvis and Mister Ed. Listen - I believe that people are perfectable, that knowledge is infinite, that the world is run by secret banking cartels and is visited by aliens on a regular basis, nice ones that look like wrinkled lemurs and bad ones who mutilate cattle and want our water and our women. I believe that the future sucks and I believe that the future rocks and I believe that one day White Buffalo Woman is going to come back and kick everyone's ass. I believe that all men are just overgrown boys with deep problems communicating and that the decline in good sex in America is coincident with the decline in drive-in movie theaters from state to state. I believe that all politicians are unprincipled crooks and I still believe that they are better than the alternative. I believe that California is going to sink into the sea when the big one comes, while Florida is going to dissolve into madness and alligators and toxic waste. I believe that antibacterial soap is destroying our resistance to dirt and disease so that one day we'll all be wiped out by the common cold like martians in War of the Worlds. I believe that the greatest poets of the last century were Edith Sitwell and Don Marquis, that jade is dried dragon sperm, and that thousands of years ago in a former life I was a one-armed Siberian shaman. I believe that mankind's destiny lies in the stars. I believe that candy really did taste better when I was a kid, that it's aerodynamically impossible for a bumble bee to fly, that light is a wave and a particle, that there's a cat in a box somewhere who's alive and dead at the same time (although if they don't ever open the box to feed it it'll eventually just be two different kinds of dead), and that there are stars in the universe billions of years older than the universe itself. I believe in a personal god who cares about me and worries and oversees everything I do. I believe in an impersonal god who set the universe in motion and went off to hang with her girlfriends and doesn't even know that I'm alive. I believe in an empty and godless universe of causal chaos, background noise, and sheer blind luck. I believe that anyone who says sex is overrated just hasn't done it properly. I believe that anyone who claims to know what's going on will lie about the little things too. I believe in absolute honesty and sensible social lies. I believe in a woman's right to choose, a baby's right to live, that while all human life is sacred there's nothing wrong with the death penalty if you can trust the legal system implicitly, and that no one but a moron would ever trust the legal system. I believe that life is a game, that life is a cruel joke, and that life is what happens when you're alive and that you might as well lie back and enjoy it."
— Neil Gaiman (American Gods)
In Case You Have 10$ to Spare
Read on:
Dear NaNoWriMo Writer,
As we head into the last few days of NaNoWriMo and the Young Writers Program, I want to reach out and say: Thank you. NaNoWriMo draws so much from the spirit of its participants. Your can-do attitude, inspiring helpfulness, and great sense of humor have made this the best NaNo ever.
As I look at our current finances, I also want to reach out and say: Eeep.
Thanks to proceeds from merchandise sales and donations from 5% of this year's Wrimos, we've raised $283,000. This is a whopping number, but it doesn't cover our 2008 expenses, and leaves nothing in the bank to launch NaNoWriMo or the YWP in 2009.
Eeep. Again.
Running NaNoWriMo is a little crazy. The closest analogy I can come up with is that it's like setting out to cook and serve a meal for an unpredictably enormous number of people. We turn away no one, we charge nothing, and we try to feed everyone at exactly the same time. The service can be imperfect. Sometimes we run out of chairs. Sometimes we dump your soup on your head (and we still feel horrible about that soup).
But at the end of the day, you can count on the Office of Letters and Light to ensure that you will have a bustling, warm, and friendly place in November to come and find the encouragement you need to pull off something grand.
Building and maintaining that encouraging place for 119,000 adults and 21,000 kids and teens takes a tremendous amount of work and money. If you believe in NaNoWriMo, please donate to the Office of Letters and Light today. A $10 donation from 10% of our participants will mean we can meet our 2008 expenses, keep the sites open year-round, rent a heck of a lot more servers, and make dozens of exciting and much-needed improvements to NaNoWriMo and the Young Writers Program.
Free things are fragile things, even if they appear solid or inevitable from the outside. Please join the 10% group of SuperWrimos whose donations will help us bring NaNoWriMo and the YWP back for another year of bookish adventures in 2009.
I thank you mightily for your support, and wish you a wonderfully wordy final weekend of NaNoWriMo!

Not to jinx it, but at 49,555 words on Saturday the 29th, unless I suffer a sudden and pretty immediate coronary (knocking on wood, etc., etc.) I think I'll make it to the finish line for NaNoWriMo this year!
